History: Elephant Heart plums were developed by renowned horticulturalist Luther Burbank in California. Starting in the 1900s, Burbank carefully hand-pollinated Japanese cultivars to produce this variety which was named for its large size, deep red colouration, and heart-like shape. In 1929 Stark Bro's Nursery introduced the variety to the public.

Why We Grow It: These plums are unique for their large size and the juicy, red flesh is a sight to behold, earning them the alternate name of 'blood plum.' They have an excellent flavour for fresh eating or when used for cooking, baking, and preserving, and the bright red juice helps to add a unique hue to dishes.
