Species: Prunus persica
History: These seedlings are grown from a mix of seeds that we collected here at Silver Creek Nursery and that we ordered in. The parent of these seedlings will be one of five varieties:
- Redhaven or Veteran: Collected here at Silver Creek Nursery, this seedling will have either Redhaven or Veteran as a parent. Both are excellent peaches and have been the most reliable when it comes to producing fruit in our orchard. Redhaven in particular is the most popular variety in North America.
- Siberian C: An extremely hardy peach from the Gobi Desert region, although the fruit is smaller than average it has good flavour and produces an excellent juice. It is also commonly used for rootstock.
- TPT: More info coming soon!
- Vivid: A peach known for its bright red fruit and sweet, juicy flesh. It is less hardy than Redhaven.
Why We Grow It: Peach seedlings tend to stay fairly true to type so odds are you're going to get a pretty solid peach tree once they mature and it is hoped that growing them from seed here will make them a littler hardier! For those who prefer the certainty that comes with getting a named variety, these trees would also be great for feeding wildlife or planting along a fence line.
