We are taking a break from growing this cultivar this year! Stay tuned when we cycle it back in, in future years!

History: Elstar apples were developed in the Netherlands in the 1950s and are a cross between Golden Delicious and Ingrid Marie. This excellent combination has created what is considered one of the best Golden Delicious offspring. Fittingly, it has since become quite popular in continental Europe. Despite being introduced to the US in 1972, it has not attained the same level of popularity in North America.

Why We Grow It: Elstar is a flavourful variety, fine for fresh eating or sauce with its crisp, juicy flesh. The skin is distinctive, sporting a marbled appearance consisting primarily of red skin with some yellow-green patches.

Canadian Hardiness Zone: 5

Soil Preference: Sandy loam, loam, clay loam. Prefers average to moist conditions, avoid planting anywhere that floods for more than two weeks in the spring. Generally quite adaptable to different soil conditions.

Growth Habits and Disease Resistance: Very vigorous but precocious, tends to crop biennially but crops well. Slightly susceptible to mildew and fireblight, susceptible to scab and phytophthora rot.

Sun/Shade: Full sun (approx. 8-10 hours of sun daily)

Pollination: Requires a pollinator of a different apple variety that blooms around the same time

Flowering Time: Middle
