History: Swaar (translated from Dutch as 'heavy') was discovered in 1804 in the Hudson River Valley (New York) by Dutch colonizers who named the variety for its density and weight. This variety was quite popular in the 1800s but slowly fell out of fashion as other commercial varieties entered the market.
Why We Grow It: This dense, yellow apple is not to be overlooked, even if it has faded from obscurity. The rich, aromatic flesh has a great flavour that improves when the apple is stored for about a month. For those interested in attracting deer and other wildlife to the yard, Swaar is an excellent choice since the apples will hang onto the tree well into the winter.
Canadian Hardiness Zone: 5
Soil Preference: Sandy loam, loam, clay loam. Prefers average to moist conditions, avoid planting anywhere that floods for more than two weeks in the spring. Generally quite adaptable to different soil conditions.
Growth Habits and Disease Resistance: Vigorous with a spreading growth habit, tends to fruit every other year. Susceptible to canker and very susceptible to mildew and fireblight.
Sun/Shade: Full sun (approx. 8-10 hours of sun daily)
Pollination: Requires a pollinator of a different apple variety that blooms around the same time
Flowering Time: Middle
Ripens: Early October
Storage: Keeps until December when stored in cool, humid conditions
Recommended Use: Fresh eating, attracting deer
Size including roots:
