Species: Hippophae rhamnoides

History: Aside from the fact that Klavdija sea buckthorn originated in Russia, little can be found about the origins of this variety in English. 

Why We Grow It: Klavdija, like other Russian-bred sea buckthorns, is noted for its excellent flavour that is on the sweeter side. The bush produces good crops and, unlike other Russian varieties, boasts moderate drought resistance.

Soil Preference: Prefers clay loam but adaptable to different soil types

Growth Habits and Disease Resistance: Shrub grows up to 1.5m tall, produces good crops. Moderate tolerance to drought which is better than other sea buckthorn.

Thorns: Yes, but this variety is almost thornless

Sun/Shade: Full sun (approx. 8-10 hours of sun daily)

Pollination: Requires a male plant for pollination in order to produce fruit

Flowering Time: Late

Bloom Colour: Yellowish-white

Storage: Keeps up to two weeks in the fridge

Recommended Use: Cooking, baking, jam, wine, juice, tea

Size: 1 year plant in 3" pot, ~20cm above soil
