The Pulse of the Farm

  • Fruit harvests now, tree digging ahead!

September

As we roll into September, we have plenty to keep us busy, though it tends to be a bit of a 'catch-up' month, as the bulk of the nursery work slows. We have plenty to do though:

  • Orchard Tasting Boxes are on! And other fruit harvesting for our annual Open House & Tasting on Thanksgiving weekend
  • Potted plant sales ramp up as the heavy heat of summer is past
  • Field prep for digging: labeling, removing stakes & irrigation
  • Thanksgiving Open House & Tasting Event!

October

The Open House is always a big effort for us, but also lots of fun! It's a wonderful way to connect with like-minded fruity friends, eat good fruit, and commiserate with fellow orchardists on the past seasons woes and wins. This month we are also:

  • Full steam ahead with pre-orders
  • Digging prep finished, the fields ready and the tent for the tasting gets revamped for digging
  • Sometimes we even start digging at the end of the month!
  • Digging, digging, digging!

November

This is always a big month for us, with all the bustle of digging. First we spend up to2 weeks digging, grading, organizing our main crop, then head over to Steph's Dads farm (True Root Nursery) for another couple days harvesting berries, seedlings and rootstock. We are:

  • Keeping up with pre-orders
  • managing inventory: updating the website and trying to keep grades, quantities, species meticulously tracked and organized
  • organizing cold storage
  • sawdusting roots and keeping them covered and moist
  • working hard in all the biting November winds/rain/snow/sleet/sun
  • getting good and ready for some cozy, brain-defragmenting hibernation in December
  • The come-down after digging crazy-making

December

Peace settles as the first snows blanket the earth. Except we are often still organizing in our very tight cold storage facilities (we need more cold storage - which is slowly in the works!). You can find us:

  • organizing and re-organizing in cold storage, solving any inventory mysteries from digging
  • setting up spring pre-orders
  • planning the next crop
  • getting scionwood inventory
  • planning orchard care
  • sitting by the fire learning new things
  • taking a bit of time off
