Sunchoke Tuber (Unknown Variety)

Our sunchokes are Zack's favourite this year! Zack has this to say about our OG sunchoke tubers: “It blows my mind how fast sunchokes grow.  This particular variety has produced stalks almost 20ft high in two different locations for multiple years now.  Though its tuber size is nothing to write home about, its stalk size sure is! I wonder about the soil-building potential of these giants! Not having to replant these edible tubers is such a blessing, but beware if you want to get rid of them.”

Species: Helianthus tuberosus, Sunchokes are also known as Jerusalem Artichokes or J Chokes

History: Sunchokes are native to central North America and have traditionally been cultivated by indigenous peoples for their edible tubers. European colonizers sent samples back to Europe where it became naturalized. It has fallen into obscurity in North America but there was some success in marketing it commercially in the 1990s and 2000s. These sunchokes are the first ones we started offering here at Silver Creek Nursery! Although we do not know what variety (if any) they are, they have done quite well for us in our front garden and have been a tasty part of many staff meals over the years!

Why We Grow It: These native plants produce tasty root tubers that, like potatoes, can be prepared and eaten in a variety of ways including raw, roasted, or treated like sauerkraut. Most people can eat them no problem, but some folks do find they can get mildly gassy if they enjoy too much at a time, so if you have never eaten them before, moderation is advised. They are in the sunflower family so get quite tall and produce lovely little yellow flowers. They spread vigorously as well, and should be managed (easily done with mowing or hand pulling in summer).

Sun/Shade Requirements: Full sun to partial shade (approx. 6-10 hours of sun daily)

General Growth Habit: Grows 6ft tall, spreads vigourously. Not generally bothered by pests or diseases. Flowers late August to September. Harvest October to December, but best after one or two lights frosts.

Pick-up: We also have thousands of plants picked up from our nursery each year. The pick-up options is free, though you must wait until you have been emailed a confirmation that your order is ready to pick up, which will have further information such as hours, locations, etc.

When Will My Order Be Ready?

Most of our bareroot plants and tubers are only available for spring planting! Only bareroot apples and pears are available for fall planting.

Spring orders are generally ready to be picked up or shipped out anywhere from late March to late May! We will be in touch in the spring once your order is ready to go. Orders placed in the spring might not be ready for 1-2 weeks as this is a very busy time of year for us.

Jerusalem artichokes come as the following grade:

-1lb of Tubers - each tuber is 3-10cm

Our bareroot perennial vegetables are sold as root crowns or tubers and will often have little to no vegetative growth on them.

Orders that are cancelled last minute due to size (being "too small"), will still incur the applicable cancellation fees if the plants are true to our grading standards as per the agreement of sale when the order was placed.

Like with our other plants, we recommend planting our perennial vegetables dormant so the transplanting process is less stressful on them. As a result, they may not look like much when you receive them but they tend to start growing fairly quickly.
