Stella Sweet Cherry Bareroot

Note regarding size: We received extra large trees from our supplier this year so we've created a new grade size called 2m+ branched. The trees may be pruned to slightly below 2m to fit into boxes at shipping.

History: Stella sweet cherries were developed by the Summerland Research and Development Centre in British Columbia in 1956 by K.O. Lapins, after whom Lapins cherries are named. These cherries were named and released in 1968, becoming the first named variety of self-pollinating sweet cherries. They have since become very popular, especially in the UK, and have been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. 

Why We Grow It: The Royal Horticultural Society was right to commend Stella. These large cherries have skin that is shiny yet extremely dark red, creating a feast for the eyes as well as the mouth! The flesh is medium firm and has a lovely sweet flavour, great for fresh eating as well as canning. Stella is self-pollinating and makes an excellent pollinator for other varieties.

    Soil Preferance: Sandy loam, loam, clay loam with good fertility. Sweet cherries don't like their feet wet, so be sure to plant in well-drained soils, avoid planting anywhere that floods for more than two weeks in the spring.

    Flowering Time: Middle

    Bloom Colour: White

    Pollination Requirements: Self-pollinating, this variety will produce fruit without a cherry tree of a different variety but will produce more and better fruit if one is present. Sweet and Sour cherries cannot be relied upon to pollinate each other. Stella is an excellent pollinator for other sweet cherries.

    Sun/Shade Requirements: Full sun (approx. 8-10 hours of sun daily)

    General Growth Habit: Spreading growth habit. Somewhat resistant to canker.

    Pick-up: We also have thousands of trees picked up from our nursery each year. The pick-up options is free, though you must wait until you have been emailed a confirmation that your order is ready to pick up, which will have further information such as hours, locations, etc.

    We have simplified our crop inventory for grafted fruit trees into two sizes:

    1m+ Grade: this often has some feathering, and is measured including the rootstock.

    50-80cm Grade: this is like a 'b-grade' tree, sometimes with minor scaring or bent, these trees are priced accordingly.
